GMO TECH, Inc. (CEO: Akihito Suzuki, hereinafter referred to as GMO TECH), a GMO Internet Group company that provides online customer acquisition services, has announced that it will begin offering out-of-app billing services.(* 1)Aiming to expand its business globally, the company is pleased to announce that on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, it reached an agreement to jointly promote the business with six domestic game media companies as the first step.

GMO TECH aims to develop a global market for out-of-app payments, and plans to launch various projects in collaboration with domestic and international media.
As the first step, we have reached an agreement with six major domestic game media companies. The game media will promote "GMO Out-of-App Purchases" by publishing articles related to "GMO Out-of-App Purchases" and providing useful services to app users, such as campaigns where they can purchase in-game items at a discount. By utilizing the abundant traffic of each media and the resources of the GMO Internet Group, we aim to promote the out-of-app purchases business globally and build a platform, while contributing to the revitalization and growth of the game and other app markets.
(※1) This is a payment method in which payments are made on an external website rather than within the app. App operators can avoid the high platform fees (typically 30%) incurred with in-app purchases, and app users have the advantage of being able to choose from a variety of payment methods, including credit cards.
[Background to collaboration with six game media companies]
Out-of-app purchases are expected to not only increase revenue for app operators, but also ultimately lead to improved convenience for app users and the creation of a cost-effective billing environment. However, awareness of out-of-app purchases among app users is not sufficient, and raising awareness among app users is a major challenge to the growth of out-of-app purchases. In light of this situation, GMO TECH has decided to collaborate with game media that disseminate information about apps to jointly promote the out-of-app purchase business.
Game media, which provide the latest app news and strategy information, play a role in connecting app developers and app users. In this collaboration, partner game media will provide useful services to app users, such as publishing articles related to "GMO Out-of-App Purchasing" and campaigns that allow users to purchase in-game items at a discount, thereby raising awareness among app users and providing a new payment experience. Furthermore, in the future, we plan to provide the "GMO Out-of-App Purchasing" function to partner game media. This will eliminate the need for partner game media to build their own systems, allowing them to focus their costs and resources on creating content that is useful to app users.
